This lovely antique iron bird cage has quite the history. First let me describe the cage. It is 26" tall and 21" at its widest diameter and 17.5" in diameter at the base. It does not have a bottom so it would need to sit flat on something to actually hold a bird. The brackets for the perch are there but not the wood perch. The doors still open and work. It has dings and dents from age and wear. My guess is that it is early 20th century.
Now---it's bizarre story. I am selling this for my elderly friend Dolores Davis. Ms. Davis has had a very colorful life. She was for many years a successful opera singer. She had an affair with a famous astronaut and another with a very popular TV star. (Her brother-in-law was also a successful TV actor). Eventually she found herself working for Rudi Altobelli. Altobelli was a personal manager for actors such as Olivia Hussey (who Dolores spent most of her time working for). He owned a house on Cielo Drive that he eventually rented to Doris Day's son, Terry Melcher. When Melcher moved, Altobelli rented next to Roman Polanski and his young expecting wife, actress Sharon Tate. Altobelli was in Europe on the night in 1969 when Charles Manson's minions went on their hideous murder spree, ruthlessly killing Sharon Tate and her friends, as everyone knows. Altobelli had a weimaraner dog but there were also 2 poodles Pina & Pepe that she believes had been in the guest house with the wemaraner during the murders. Afterwards police took the dogs away and Ms. Davis was the one Altobelli called to rescue the poodles and reclaim them. Ms. Davis was at the house with Altobelli when things had been piled outside from the cleaned up. She mentioned she liked a birdcage (FINALLY, the birdcage!) that had been placed out in the pile. He gave it to her and she has had it ever since. Ms. Davis spent more time in the house after the murders as Altobelli didn't sell it.
Dolores Davis is a wonderful character and she said--"tell whoever buys the birdcage to call me and I'll tell them all about it!". So the offer is out there. She does not know what part of the house the birdcage was in--but she strongly suspects the guest house, but she knows it definitely came from that complex. I felt a little strange at first thinking about the birdcage's history but then I thought--Dolores Davis kept flowers in it for the last 40 years--I got over it. She's a bright, cheerful person and that took away all the shadowy thoughts floating around in my mind. Of course there is no way to PROVE the cage is from the Cielo house (although Dolores believes Polanski gave a tour of the house that was filmed if it shows up in that)(and the photo added here of Dolores at the Cielo drive house) but talking to Dolores Davis--and her many details---just a FEW I have included in this listing--you know that it in fact did.
The cage is large and heavy to ship within the USA (lower 48 states)--approx. $70 via UPS. I will offer this as a local pick-up in the Los Angeles area to avoid this charge. I cannot ship this outside of the country.

I'm so glad no one has bid yet on this item because I really wanted the opportunity to speak about this listing. I have been amazed at the emails I have received about this item that are filled with name calling, anger and even threats to bid on my other auction items with the sole intend of leaving negative feedback. As I said, I'm selling this item for my friend Dolores Davis who told me its history. I jotted down some notes but I have obviously made mistakes with my interpretation of the notes. I knew very little about the murders before now (but I'm learning fast) and just used my notes to make the listing. That was a big error on my part--I should have thought to have checked everything but it didn't occur to me to do that. I thought my notes were enough. I have never experienced this kind of detail picking--which I don't fault. It's a sensative, serious subject and if I'm getting involved I should have done better. I have a list of mistakes/errors/confusion etc. on my part so today I called Dolores to get her story again. This time I knew the facts much better and had more pointed questions to ask. I did not help or steer her thoughts in any way and I am satisfied from her answers, plus further details she provided today that without a doubt this birdcage is from the Cielo Drive complex at the time of the murders. I revised my original listing to correct my mistakes over the past few days to get things correct, but let me go over my original mistakes and other issues that have since been brought up. My biggest error was I said a guy named Robert lived in the guest house and was a victim. Of course that is wrong. Dolores never met any of the murdered victims. She was only at the house after the murders. The houseboy at the time Dolores was there was named Robert. When she was talking about the houseboy and the boy that was killed leaving the guest house and the guy who lived at the guest house--my lack of familiarity with the case caused me to get confused and in my mind I combined those 3 people. She did not say the person living in the guest house was killed and she was referring to the name Robert only as the houseboy that was at the house after the murders. My error caused all that confusion. She does not claim to have met Roman Polanski or that he gave her a tour of the house (I never said that in the listing but that has somehow become a point). Dolores is connected to the house via Rudi Altobelli and the two dogs Pepe and Pina. One emailer said my listing was a fraud because Rudi had one dog and it was named Christopher and Christopher was "never taken in by the police". I thought, if this is true--Dolores must be completely wrong. It took me only 60 seconds on the internet to find a photo of the police removing Christopher and carrying out 2 small dogs. Dolores told me Pepe (white) & Pina (chocolate brown) were little poodles that were in the guest house with Christopher. She said there were other pets but she doesn't know what happened to them. "Abigail Folger had a dog" but she never heard what happened to it. Dolores kept Pepe and Pina until they died. The emailer said Rudi Altobelli had been contacted regarding this listing and did not know Dolores. I asked Dolores again about this. She worked for Rudi Altobelli & his partner Stuart Cohen (I don't know the correct spelling of his name). She said "I have a photo of Rudi, Stuart & Jim Nabors on my sofa". She called back and said she couldn't find it but she did find of photo of her sitting at Rudi's desk holding either Pepe or Pina. I will try to add that photo to the listing in the next couple of days (I have to physically get it from Dolores). If Rudi was actually contacted he may have forgotten Dolores, but he knew her at one time. When I led the emailer to the photos of the dogs being removed by police she then suddenly knew their names and said they were not poodles but terriers named Prudence and Tom. She said that Debra Tate (Sharon's sister) kept Prudence and Tom--Abigail's dog, Debra found a home for. I think that there is room for both versions. Dolores told me there was at least one other dog and there may have been more (that Abigail had one for sure). Debra Tate is quoted as saying she doesn't know Dolores--why would she? Dolores never met Sharon or Roman Polanski. The emailer has even said that they doubt Dolores was an opera singer. I have another listing right now on eBay of WHERE magazine with Dolores on the cover regarding her appearance in an opera. I have been accused of trying to profit from the death of the vicitims. Frankly this accusation is hurtful but caused me to do some soul searching. In a certain light I must admit I am. Just like a TV show magazine show makes money off the death of someone when they air a program about a real murder or a newspaper with sensational headlines. Or perhaps in this case, more like the museum that charges people money to see relics from the wreck of the Titanic. Does that dishonor the memory of those who lost their lives on the doomed ship? In my opinion no. The museum has the right to show that exhibit and the public has the right to decide for themselves if they want to see it. Our society places a value on items connected to famous people. I guess that does exploit the person in a certain way but that is the history of the object. This birdcage came from a pile of trash being cleaned out of the house or guest house on Cielo Drive after the murders. That's its history. If I was making it up, believe me, I would have picked an item that had more universal appeal than an antique bird cage and definitely something easier and cheaper to mail. I value my perfect score on eBay--I've worked hard to earn it over the past 7 years. I definitely thought about removing this listing and taking the easy road, but I don't like being bullied when I have the right to do something. It is my right to list this item for sale and include its history. It is your right to think I'm out of line or not. It is not your right to bully me for my choice. I have every confidence this item is exactly as claimed. I stand by it and my freedom to sell it.
LAST REVISION--I soooo promise! I said Dolores had a photo of her holding one of the dogs inside Rudi Altobelli's Cielo Dr. house. It was taken during the time she worked for him and would come to the house and it is with Pepe. I'm adding it now to the listing. It doesn't show a lot of the room but it would be enough for Rudi to recognize if whoever passed the info along to him before would care to again.

Not a word in the Homicide Investigation Report, Helter Skelter, or any of the trial testimony about the dogs -- which Garretson said were in and out of the guest house all night -- disturbing the scene or the bodies on the lawn. How could that be? When my kids scrape their knees the dogs in the neighborhood are immediately drawn to the blood. Smell and even lick their cuts as if they're ice cream. Can some forensic or animal specialist explain why those dogs wouldn't be traipsing blood all over the place?

Few things in response: 1. I've never seen anything about a fenced in area in any of the diagrams, maps, photos, etc. of the yard -- or in the testimony.
2. What about the dog that as, Salem pointed out, allegedly took Susan's knife?
3. What about Abigail and Sharon's dogs? They weren't with Garretson in the back house.
4. Finally, and why the hell that same damn thing at LaBianca's? Two rambunctious dogs and no crime secene animal disturbance reported!

Anyone notice this? Bruce Davis got 120 days. You know what happens that same month? Thats the month Charles Manson has a parole hearing. Doesn't look good for Davis.

Charles Manson has been denied parole ten times. His last denial was in April 2002. His next parole hearing is scheduled for 2007.

Sharon's ghost came to me in my sleep and told me that i must protest more.
i just emailed the buyer and told them that sharon does not want the birdcage to be sold.
Altobelli had a weimaraner dog but there were also 2 poodles Pina & Pepe that she believes had been in the guest house with the wemaraner during the murders. Afterwards police took the dogs away and Ms. Davis was the one Altobelli called to rescue the poodles and reclaim them.

BIG mystery! Not a word in the Homicide Investigation Report, Helter Skelter, or any of the trial testimony about the dogs -- which Garretson said were in and out of the guest house all night -- disturbing the scene or the bodies on the lawn. How could that be? When my kids scrape their knees the dogs in the neighborhood are immediately drawn to the blood. Smell and even lick their cuts as if they're ice cream. Can some forensic or animal specialist explain why those dogs wouldn't be traipsing blood all over the place?

The dogs were not allowed to run loose, if Garrettson let the dogs out at any time during the night, it was in a fenced in area right off of the guest house.

I think so too. I always wondered about that.
in the OJ crime, there were bloody prints from Nicoles dog. I might add that was a very smart dog also.

Few things in response:
1. I've never seen anything about a fenced in area in any of the diagrams, maps, photos, etc. of the yard -- or in the testimony.
2. What about the dog that as, Salem pointed out, allegedly took Susan's knife?
3. What about Abigail and Sharon's dogs? They weren't with Garretson in the back house.
4. Finally, and why the hell that same damn thing at LaBianca's? Two rambunctious dogs and no crime secene animal disturbance reported!
