There is No Time Limit

I was wondering... follow me here. If the Col were to be brutally murdered today by an alleged hippie cult. I know my supermodel wife would do what she could to make sure no one walked for as long as she lived. Now let's say I had three kids. I don't- I think there are enough people walking around on my earth anyway. But say I did. I'd want and expect the three of them to make sure that the killers didn't get off. Again, I get that.

Now I DO have two nephews and three nieces. I really do not know them- they are 30 + years EACH younger than me. I would NOT expect them to get absorbed into the mess of my murder. Hell, I wouldn't even like it much.

I guess the question I ask is, WHAT really constitutes a next of kin? I met Jay's nephew one afternoon 18 years ago at the USC special collection library. He did not even know the details of his uncle's murder. I had to turn him on to the HS novel, because that was all I knew at the time. Now, he remains the ONLY next of kin on the Sebring side to EVER attend a parole hearing. And even then he only did DECADES after the murder. Is that cool? I know it is legal, but I suspect his motives. The entire Kummer (Sebring) Family disowned the guy right? So what is this last minute "oh, my life was affected" shit?

Same with Smaldino. Neither Frank nor Suzann have EVER come to a hearing. These are the next of kin. NOT the ex-wife.

It just feels a bit off to me.

That's what I'm saying.

Hiya Col,

At Susan Atkins last hearing, Anthony Dimaria and Margaret Dimaria both attended. I know Anthony is Jay's nephew and I think Margaret was Jay's sister. Marie Ford also attended, although I don't know who she was related to. So, if both Anthony and Margaret attended, that means more than just Jays nephew attended..

=)

I sometimes wonder about what next of kin actualy is in California.Do nephews and other extended family get to go to the parole board hearings? If not ,how did this case merit an exception?

I might ge going out on a limb here. Patti Tate's married name was Ford. She was married to Don Ford, a former LA Laker. Sharon's middle name was Marie. Maybe it was one of Patti's kids?

There is a ring on Ebay that was supposedly Sharon's. Paige over at sharontate.net is up in arms. Why would someone sell something that Sharon gave to them. They are saying any jewelry should be Debra's property.

Debra is an odd one.

Here's a link to the ring...

There are some photos of Sharon wearing the ring or one very similar to it.

My guess is that Debra is pissed off because she's not the one selling it.

Col, I can't answer the why now question..

Anthony said that he was only 3 years old when Jay died, and that his memories of Jay are very clear. That I doubt very much...

In my opinion, I don't care how long it took him to go, I'm just glad he's finally going. Maybe Debra had something to do with it...

=)

I dunno if Patti's children are old enough to attend hearings.. They might be, but I'm not sure how old they are...

=)

I think that maybe Debra was asked by the Smaldino family to attend. She's a veteran at these parole hearings and I think her presence helps them get through it...

The whole ring thing is a load of bullshit. Roman gave all of Sharons belongings to Paul Tate, they now belong to Debra. This person who's selling the fake rings claims to have been an actress who worked with Elvis.. I find that a little hard to believe... But I'm a very skeptical person anyway lol

Oh I'm sure it's all for profit.

That group over at sharontate.net are all worshipping the ground Debra walks on. Someone will ask a question like, "Did Sharon prefer 2 or 3 ply toilet paper?" Paige will reply with, "That's a great question. I don't know the answer but Debra will. I'll call her in the morning."

Then there's the absent webmaster, Chris. At one time he bought a dog and named it Prudence, the same as Sharon's dog. For some reason they all bow to Debra just because she was Sharon's sister. Can't they see what's going on?

Postscript -- Doing a search I found details of Susan Atkins parole hearing. Marie Ford stated she was the victim's niece. I would imagine she's at least college aged.

According to Nellie's book, MANSON BEHIND THE SCENES, Don Ford hated talking about the crimes.

Debra isn't a veteren at the parole hearings. She didn't go until Doris and Patti were gone. That in itself brings up another question -- Why did it take a mother's and sister's passing to get Debra to go?

What I meant by veteran is that she's had more experince going to these hearings than the Smaldino's do...

I'm not a big fan of Debra either. But I don't hate her, cause I don't know her...

Hmmm, my user name and password no longer works on the Sharon Tate discussion board. It worked fine last week....

Well, Paige knows that I'm not a Debra fan, but I do try to maintain respect because I know that she and Paige are friends.

I've never even posted on the Sharon Tate board, so I'm curious as to why my login information no longer works. All I've ever done there is just read the posts. KTS keeps me way too busy to get caught up in other discussions lol

Really except for Doris and Patti, no one went to the parole hearings.

Now that they are both gone others have started. I believe Steven Parent's sister and girlfriend attended one of the hearings for Atkins.

The Folger family has been very quiet. You don't hear much about them.

Does anyone know for sure that the ring on e-bay is really Sharon's engagement ring? I think the only one who would truly know is Debra. Is it really Debra selling that ring? With her, anything's possible. What does she do with the money she rakes in for selling out her sister when people buy bumper stickers, coffee mugs and other tacky items from Sharon's Official website? Somebody call the IRS! Be a whistle blower and get a cut from any refunds Debra would be required to pay if she has been evading the IRS!
Why is it that Debra shows up at Van Houten's hearings? To get her ugly mug on TV, that's why. She's a fame hag! She probably hones in on the Smaldino family who have every right to speak at Van Houten's hearings. I've wondered why Leno's children and Rosemary's son, Frank, don't attend the hearings? I do not judge them as I have not walked in their shoes. Janet Parent shows up for Atkins hearings but she has stated that she fears for her family and that is understandable. But she still shows up.
Where was Debra when her father died? Was she still holding a grudge because her father gave Patti the house in Palos Verdes Estates after Doris died? And why does Debra think she's solely entitlted to Sharon's personal property? Why won't she share them with Patti's children? Sharon was their Aunt, too.
As for the Dimaria family-Anthony is an actor and as had small tv roles. Maybe his career needs a boost so why not show up at Jay's killer's hearings and get your name and picture in the paper? I thought Jay's family disowned him when he became a hair stylist and changed his name to Sebring. Now it's a love-fest for Uncle Jay. Give me a break! It's 36 years too late, people! You have no credibility whatsoever.
Debra testified at Roman's lawsuit against Vanity Fair. What she testified to I don't know since she was only 16 when the murders happened. Why doesn't she just ask Roman for the $15,000 for Sharon's Star on the HWOF? Considering Roman is not allowed back into the U.S., does he even know about Sharon's star? Think, people, Think!

Problem Child said...

Debra is not the one selling the ring. She's upset because someone else is. Apparently Debra believes everything Sharon ever owned belongs to her. If Sharon gave the ring away to a friend, that was her choice.

According to Sharon's website, Paige called Debra about the ring. Debra called Polanski in Paris. She and Paige are "trying to get to the bottom of this".

I don't know if it's really Sharon's ring or not. If it is and she gave it to a friend and that friend decides to sell it, that's their prerogative. I don't think it'll sell at that price on Ebay. A reputable auction house (Sotherby's) would have been a much better choice when asking for that amount.

Debra could raise enough money for 15 stars for Sharon, but the committee has to approve the star for her. In the past, that has been unsuccessful. Unfortunately, Sharon's most telling claim to fame is connected to her death and Manson. I believe the process involves nominating someone for a star and the members of the committee vote on it. Until Sharon's name can be associated with something other than her untimely death, I don't see it happening. Maybe if Debra established a "foundation" in her name that had a positive effect on society, Sharon's star wouldn't be just a pipe dream. Until then, I don't think it's the $$ that is the main obstacle.....

Suzann LaBerg (Rosemary's daughter) attended a hearing for Tex in 1990 saying she'd forgiven him and thought he deserved to be released. Barf.

I think the Smaldino's are genuine. Angela first attended a hearing in 1999 (the hearing Leslie walked out of). Alice LaBianca (Leno's first wife) wrote a letter to the board the year before that. Leslie's group had been making comments about no one from the LaBianca family attending any of her hearing (e.g., Larry King Live) and implying tacit approval from the family for her release. I think they were worried should would really get a release date and decided to finally speak out.

Heaven said...

Well, isn't that interesting. Debra had to call Roman in Paris to ask him about the ring. I was under the impression that Debra owned everything that was Sharon's. So she doesn't own this ring? Hmmmm, maybe she can cough up $25,000 and get it back...

I have to say, that it is very interesting that she doesn't already have it. $25,000 for an ugly ring that is missing stones? That's a bit much...

Deb B said...

I just read the ring description. Garnets, sterling silver, opal.

Gah. Considering who they were, that is a piece of shit engagement ring.

Has anyone found a picture of her wearing it?

Heaven said...

Yes, I've seen a picture of her wearing it. Someone posted it to a group I'm in. But the picture isn't a close up, so there is no way to tell if they're the same ring or not. But since Debra doesn't have the ring, it is possible that this could be it.. The missing stones bother me though. If this "Leigh" person loved and respected Sharon so much, you'd think she would have taken better care of something so irreplaceable.. Just my opinion...

Bren said...

I find it very hard to believe that Sharon would of given her engagement ring away while she was alive. I would never part with mine from my husband. It might of been believable if they had divorced before her death, but they were still married, so that rules that out.
So in my opinion, that would put it in the hands of the Tate family at the time of her death......
Bren :)

The story is, Roman gave it away after Sharon's death....

I guess I just assumed it went to Sharon's family...

Debra has Sharon's wedding dress and some of her clothes and that's all well and good, for her but not for Patti's children. They have nothing. Not only did they loose their beautiful and loving mother at such a young age, they have lost any connection with the Tate family whatsoever. How can Debra be so cruel?
But what really gets me up is that Debra claims to have a jar or bottle of Sharon's favorite skin lotion. I would think that, after 37 years, that lotion would have evaporated by now. I'm not a cosmetic chemist but come on! I find it hard to believe there could be anything left of that lotion. Unless, of course, Debra is stirring her witches brew in her back yard and passing it off as once belonging to Sharon.
I agree that the Smaldino's presence at Van Houten's hearings should be respected. I don't question why they waited so long before attending the hearings but I don't question their integrity at all.
The most ridiculous statement ever made by Debra was at a recent hearing-I believe it was Atkins last hearing. She said her daughter came across Sharon's death pics and was so unnerved by them that she had a breakdown and had to be hospitalized. Understandable, maybe. But the corker is Debra saying her daughter had a breakdown because when she saw Sharon's death pics, she thought she was looking at the face of her mother! Debra is actually saying she resembles Sharon in death. Poor Sharon couldn't even be murdered without her sister trying to hone in on her horrific death! Debra didn't look like Sharon or Patti at all!
It's just all too much for me to even comprehend. Sibling rivalry with a dead sister. It's sick!
What in God's name is wrong with Debra? She scares the hell out of me!

Bren said...

I still have a bottle of my mom's favorite cologne Emeraude. It is still like it was when she died in 1975. None of it has evaporated from the bottle. NOW if you open it to smell, it has a really strong odor. Nothing like it should smell.

Does the state of California have limitations on who may attend a parole hearing? While I have deep respect for the victims families I find it hard to buy in to letting those who were too young to remember, or not yet born to speak at these hearings. This calls in to question as to the validity of the process.
I also don't see the point in anyone from the Tate family being at the Van Houten hearings. It gives the impression of a re-trial instead of a parole hearing.

I don't feel sorry for the killers, either. But I have to agree 100% with Anton in regard to Debra attending LVH's hearings. Invited or not, she shouldn't be allowed to attend. I don't hate her, and I don't care what she sells, but she is expecting special treatment but doesn't think anyone else should be treated differently.
