"Now is the time for Helter Skelter." - Charles Manson to The Family, August 8, 1969
"Now is the time for Helter Skelter." Scott Michaels of Dearly Departed Tours to horrified Angelinos - August 8, 2006
Hollywood, CA (August 2, 2006) – The 37th anniversary of the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders at the hands of the Charles Manson family continue to be a fascination, and will be commemorated in typical death hag style by Dearly Departed Tours, with a special three + hour “Helter Skelter” theme tour the week of August 8, 2006 in Los Angeles, Calif.
“This time of year is like our Christmas,” said Scott Michaels, Dearly Departed’s owner and director of undertakings. “The Manson Family murders are part of our regular tour, and because it always prompts wide-eyed interest I’ve decided to expand and make it an entire tour option for my clientele.”
Besides the murder residences, Michaels will include on the tour sites that relate to the day-to-day aspects of life of the victims, such as victim Jay Sebring’s hair salon, the El Coyote restaurant where the Tate group had their “last supper”, the bicycle shop where victim Abigail Folger purchased her yellow bike the afternoon of her murder. On the other side of town, we retrace the final steps of Rosemary and Leno LaBianca, victims of the second night of murders. “These sites make the whole thing seem more real and give life to the victims as everyday people,” said Michaels.
Additionally, guests will see where the murderers threw their clothing and hosed off after the murders, and where they threw the murder weapon out the window of their car. You’ll see a house that was “creepy crawled.” by the Manson family, well before the murders, when they would break in to random homes and burgle or just rearrange things. Many sites have been altered since 1969 and with the help of photographs and home video footage; guests are able to relive them on Scott's 13-passenger bus.
The tour will also include a multimedia presentation made up of film and audio clips surrounding the murders and their victims, and a soundtrack playing the Top 20 of August 1969.
The price of the tour is $50, with five dollars of each ticket being donated to The Doris Tate Crime Victim Foundation, (http://www.doristate.com/foundation.htm) a California-based lobby & crime victim’s organization focusing on victim’s rights and criminal legislation. It is named in honor of Sharon Tate’s mother who became a crime victim activist until her own death in 1992.
The price also includes a piece of memorabilia – a rock from the actual fireplace of the Tate house, which Michaels himself obtained when the original house was razed in late 1993.
The Helter Skelter Tour runs during the week of the anniversary (August 8) and occasionally after that. The next tour is August 26 at 9:30am.
"Why don't they just go all out and hire actors to do re-enactments since their ultimate goal is to exploit for personal gain?"
There is a book of fiction by an LA born and bred Hollywood director/producer, etc by the name of John Kaye called "The Dead Circus" which is named after a catalogue in the book of merchandise of Manson memorabilia which was out in the early 70s (I have no idea if the catalogue was real or fiction). But in the book the protagonist comes across a seedy place on Sunset Blvd which in addition to being a whorehouse also attracts customers with their recreation of the Tate house murders. Again, I have no idea if this ever actually existed or not, but it wouldn't surpirse me if it did.
I'm torn on this one. The ad sure reads tacky. But who am I to judge? I'm on this forum indulging in my macabre fascination with the case. I have yet to visit any of the relevant locations with the exception of frequenting El Coyote when I lived in LA (but that was for the burritos, not the Tate table) but many TLB enthusiasts have visited those locales and I don't think that's morally suspect.
I don't know. If I had the time and I was still living down there I could see myself hopping on that bus for kicks and I'd be happy to see a portion of the entrance fee go to Doris Tate's foundation. But I can understand how some might view it as tacky and tasteless.
But is it any less tacky than looking up crime scene shots on the web?
thank you DK, it is good to be back. but it's damn chilly in San Francisco today and I'm already missing the east coast summer beach weather, LOL.
>>>Did you know that there's somebody down in Louisiana giving bus tours of the Hurricane Katrina mess? It's unbelievable what people won't do for money.<<<
Depends, if it raises the awareness of what those people are having to deal with, it can't be all that bad.
What's that old Woody Allen expression? Something like "tragedy plus time = comedy". Not that brutal murders could ever really make for "comedy" , but somewhere in the last 37 years TLB has gone from palpable real-life horror event to slightly kitschy time-capsule. Just ask Jim Van Bebber, LOL. When a certain amount of time passes, that's just what happens.
Granted, I would never expect the surviving family members of the victims to agree with that assessment.

oh yes you did, cats! don't try to snow the snowman. my ears were ringing during my entire vacation and I just knew you were eviscerating Linda and her pigtails. But even after all these years I think her locks are still strong and can withstand the pulling. She washes and conditions with Paul Mitchell which i hear does wonders for split-ends.
demon knight said... >>>There's talk of a new Bugliosi book on Manson.<<<
maybe it's a Where Are They Now type of follow-up? like an expansion and detailed updating of the 1994 afterward?
You know, Gypsy is praising Jesus, Squeaky is still in love, Paul is dead, Linda is trying to stay off methamphetamine and condition her pigtails with Paul Mitchell while babysitting Tanya's kids. It's a little easier to do these days as they did not have Dora The Explorer DVD's back at spahn's ranch.
"I've been told that VB will have a new Manson book out in a couple of months! I suspect we'll get more info on the upcoming "Our Generation" episode mentioned below. I've also been told a rumor of something scheduled for Halloween night. I'll leave everybody wondering about it for the time being..."
(forgive typos as I had to type that in, the site wont let me copy/paste).
catscradle77 said... >>>How is her dad? I remember seeing him in an interview and he seemed like a really nice man.<<<
He sure did. Both Mr. Van Houten and Joe Krenwinkle seem like decent, together dudes who were just blown away by what their children got involved in. Those more recent interviews like on the A7 E Biography of the Manson Women, the craziness they felt from all this combined with the love they feel for their daughters is palpable.
Salem said... >>>Bug will update and use CM til the day he dies ( Buggie that is) The Liar!!!!! what a SOB!<<<
Sometimes I find myself seeing as more of a symbiotic mutual relationship (Charlie and Vince both using each other) rather than a one-sided thing (Vince using Charlie).
Vince needed his convictions and wanted to tell his story of the case and get fame and money. Charlie knew he was going back to jail no matter what (and seems to like it there), so he needed Vince and the media to pump him up as scary in order to protect himself inside the joint.
They seemed to have both gotten what they wanted out of each other to some extent.
Sometimes I imagine Charlie and the Bug winking at each other from afar.
catscradle77 said... >>Being a parent, I an't even imagine what it felt like to them.<<<
Ok, I know I'll get laughed at and hated on for saying this but what the hell. One of the (few) things I liked about the 2004 Helter Skelter remake was the fact that they stuck in there a couple scenes between Joe Krenwinkle and his daughter when he comes to visit her in prison right after her arrest.
Just because the two actors are good, it's rather moving how he asks her "so did you do these things? what happened to you? didnt you know i loved you Pat?" and she starts to feel vulnerable, almost like she might open up to him, until she hears Sadie and Leslie singing "One Is One Is One" down the prison hall and she leaves her father to join them. The look on the guy's face as wacked-out Patricia leaves the room is priceless. I know it's just a movie but it isn't hard to imagine that kind of exchange occuring many times in real life between them.

Weren't you the person who asked about the safe being cleaned out...tis a good question, and still no answer..
I was. I suspect tho' that the safe story is just another myth.

How do you feel about the black book-
If it's the truth you are after, then I feel that these unsubstantiated "facts" should be treated with caution.

Skyhook-
Then I must ask, what do you believe the motives behind the murders were?
I really don't know.
Catscradle77 said,
Skyhook & YepYep, do you have favorite theories?
No, I don't. However, "Helter-Skelter" doesn't figure on the list of possibilities.

On the front page of that website it says that Stoviz is retiring.
Wasn't he involved in the case too one way or another? I recall reading a post by The Col about this guy.
Not the same guy. That was Aaron Stovitz. The guy retiring had only been called to the bar the year before the murders or so.
Love the Beaker... where did you get him
