August 5- Esalen

38 Years ago today Charlie was NOT at the Ranch depicted below. (Great Photo) He was at Esalen Institute up in Big Sur. What is that?

The never accurate Wikipedia says :

Esalen Institute is a center in the United States for humanistic alternative education and a nonprofit organization devoted to multidisciplinary studies ordinarily neglected by traditional academia. Esalen offers more than 500 public workshops a year in addition to invitational conferences, residential work-study programs, research initiatives, and internships. Part think-tank for the emerging world culture, part college and lab for transformative practices, and part restorative retreat, Esalen is dedicated to exploring work in the humanities and sciences that furthers the full realization of what Aldous Huxley called the “human potential”.

Charlie was touring about with a large chested wench named Stephanie Schram. They'd actually get ticketed at one point for making love. All reports indicate that Charlie thought Stephanie was really something special.

When he does get back to the ranch, tomorrow time, things are not going too well.

Esalen is supposedly very yoga/meditation/new agey kinda stuff, probably very cutting edge in the 60's (like the Kripalu Center on the east coast) but nowadays pretty dime-a-dozen.

But supposedly Charlie wasn't very well received at that facility, right?

There was a thing somewhere not too long ago about Esalen...NYTimes, maybe, the Today show? Can't remember but they went through the whole deal without even one mention of Charlie!

And has anyone ever checked out Omega up ion Rhinebeck, NY? Very deep in a Jane Fonda-ish, Meg Ryan-ish, Goldie Hawn-ish, Deepak Chopra kind of way.

yes I have heard of Omega. I had a friend back east who did some yoga training at both kripalu and omega, same kinda new agey stuff. I'm not knocking yoga, btw, I thought it was great when I was into it but I've been lapsed for a long while - BUT a lot of that stuff at those holistic centers can get a little too floofy for me.

The grounds at Omega I hear are really nice looking. Have you been there, pristash? There is supposedly good camping around there too.

Yes, indeed, I have been to Omega. My sister in law works there....it is indeed a beautiful setting. I would love to just go for a week and stay, read books, eat the food, etc....they offer that too, so you don't have to take classes. Instead right now I'm at Disney World with the Fam sucking in all that's great about our world, America in particular. Anyone else ever been to EPCOT? Just like Europe, only bigger.
