Required Reading for the Official TLB Murders Blog

We are getting inundated with new readers recently and are gonna start a big push for new readers soon. You'll tell two friends and so on and so on. So it is best to finally get this out of the way.

If you are going to understand most of the things we talk about here, you should have read the following books at least twice.

Now, the following books are actually full of a lot of shit. But they are the CORE reading for anyone interested in TLB. If you don't understand everything in these books, you cannot follow a lot of the questions that will come up.

The first two of these books are available online if you look sometimes for $2.00. That is what thet are worth. Any used bookstore should have them. Or www.ebay.com . Or www.bookfinder.com.

HELTER SKELTER by Vincent Bugliosi is a very good nonfiction novel about the case, Sold millions of copies. It is a novel in the same way that IN COLD BLOOD is a novel. The book is SOLELY Bug's point of view. Any facts that don't fit, he ignores or even twists and bends. People who worked with him are run over. It is all to the glory of the BUG. But it is a compulsive read and will make you familiar with a lot of the facts of the case too.

THE FAMILY by Ed Sanders is a messy collection of "facts" hastily assembled. There is the 1972 version, the 1989 update and the 2002 tome. The first two are fine, and really cheap. The 2002 one costs more but that is the one I use. Many factual things here but narrative style is akin to a three year old. Very hard to follow. Also, morons like Larry Melton were used as a source, so a lot of bullshit here, like Family splatter films and stuff.

MY LIFE WITH CHARLES MANSON by Paul Watkins. A compelling read by a ghost writer of the day to to day on the ranch from Little Paul's perspective. Hard to find book. Paul has a untrustworthy point of view. He worshipped Charlie, betrayed the Family, then tried to take it over again. But the books FEEL real.

It is hereafter assumed that all readers have read these books. Twice. Because without reading them how can you come with the Col and question things?

2 out of 3 for me too, Watkin's book is hard to find, for the right price. Anyone want to share or sale it to me?

I got my copy of My Life With Charles Manson on Ebay, I paid only $4.00 for it...

The reason I got it so cheap is because the seller misspelled Watkins.. He spelled it Walkins lol

So, check other spellings. Somethings you can find an awesome deal...

I LOVE the green Exorcist Charlie face on the cover of Sanders book. That is classic.

I haven't read all of Pauls book (some of it was available online somewhere I think I read it there).

One thing that is interesting about Paul (or Keith Partrdige as I like to call him) that you don't hear a lot of people talking about is that Paul, more than any other witness, was Bugliosi's trump card for the Helter Skelter theory. I think Kasabian uttered the words "helter skelter" once in her entire testimony. Paul sat up there and made all the connections between Charlie and HS.

So if you don't believe the Helter Skelter theory, was Paul just a big fat liar? I mean a short, thin liar?

I have often thought how stange it is that millions of people fear Charles Manson more than Charles "Tex" Watson.

most people do not even know who charles "tex" watson is.

funny how things play out, no?

Sorry
can't let that stand
Bobby's best friend was Charlie.
After that his best friend was pussy.
He thought Tex was too stoned out to associate with.
He wasn't ANY sort of friend with Tex

Folks, instead of shelling out the $$, try your friendly neighborhood interlibrary loan...perhaps you can even make requests online from home. That is how I've come up with many of these out of print books I've read.

Tex and Bobby were not any kind of friends

sorry Col, i said
Tex Watson, who was one of BB's best friends, not his best friend.

That doesn't even make sense.
You said he was his best friend, but not his best friend? lol

Am I just reading it wrong?

I guess we can attribute it to "Bugamania". In my mind, Tex is a madman and the one to really fear. What that man was/maybe still is, capable of is down right scary.

No offense Salem, but you do this all the time. You make matter of fact statement, then someone knowledgeable will call you on it. You then recant your statement. Even to the point of saying that you never said it in the first place. All I am asking, is that you either stand by your statements or stand corrected.

Dok said...

Opps, Salem, I must have been typing my comment as you posted, sorry about that. Good for you for standing corrected. Again sorry, I must have been typing slow.

yepyep Jess Bravin's book is really good. I like the way he writes, and he brings a level-headedness to the proceedings that is absent in so much of the other sensationalized "Family" books. He spends very little time on the murders themselves, instead he explores everything from Squeaky's perspective.

He brings Lynn to life in a way no other writer has been able to. Though disturbed and sad, she was a very creative girl with a rich imagination and a stubborn childlike innocence that seems to border on lunacy. The way she speaks and writes is very poetic, she really had/has a way with words.

Bravin's book also manages to confirm what a freaky chick Sandra Good was (and still is???)

Let us know your thoughts after you read it.

I've read HS so many times I lost count years ago. The other 2, I've not read. Yet. I have read some other books not listed. More than twice. If a book is good, or the subject matter of particular interest to me, I always read it more than twice.

Going book shopping on E-Bay now....Lol...

Spooky
