Rudy Altobelli 1929- 2011

Rudy Altobelli died last week. March 26, 2011. He was 82.

Pertinent TLB Facts about Rudy Altobelli

1- He owned 10050 Cielo Drive before, during and after the murders.
2- He did send Roman Polanski a bill for damages done to the house while renting it.
3- He was a music and film agent representing many luminaries of the day.
4- At one point he repped Christopher Jones, lost movie star who claims to have had an affair with Sharon Tate that probably did not happen.
5-Sold the house and watched as it was razed
6- Did not talk about what happened.

He has been cremated. No services have been planned. The LA Times has not even reported this. Not even a blaring "EX AGENT WHO OWNED MURDER HOUSE PASSES."

Rudy we hardly knew ye. RIP.

Great post Colonel.

I can't even imagine on any planet that anyone would ask the murder victims family to pay for replacing a blood stained carpet. Rudy did. I can only assume for whatever reason he must of thought they had some sort of culpability. Or perhaps he was just a tightwad? I suppose he had every legal right to..but..Just "yucky" for lack of better words.

R.I.P. to Rudy nonetheless.

Rudy was quite the match for Irving Kanerek on the stand, too as I remember.

Col, why do you say that the Chris Jones affair probably didn't happen?

Welcome back col- this was a private guy- who didn't ant attention. The crime of the century happened at his house- and who wants that kind of attention?? If he put himself out there- people would say he was cashing in...

Too bad about bummer bob- really- must be a very hard time for him and his- I am not his fan, and bring up the other side all the time- but he is coming to terms with the inevitable, and that must suck for him.

I belong to every site you mentioned, and Liz has the best site now for chat and up to date info/pics- Katt has a ton of info- and despite what everyone says- I have been allowed to participate in both without any problems. Neither has barred me being involved with the other site... L/S is a good guy- and hope his site grows as well! Your review was pretty accurate to what I have experienced..

All the movies always suck- but I will still watch them :)

glad you decided to stick around COL- this stuff would not be the same in any way without your two cents!!

Haven't seen Marliese in a long time- if your out there hope all is well :)

Col.,

Didn't Rudy actually sue Polanski for losses of rent and damages to the house itself because of the murder?

He was a private man for awhile but then for some reason he gave an interview to 20/20 about Cielo Drive about 4-5 years ago.

Rudy did go after Polanski for money after the fact- rent and damages

St. Circumstance, all's well, thanks for asking.
I've read the same about Rudy Altobelli enforcing the terms of his lease agreement, pretty crass if you ask me.

In the tv interview Jean mentioned, he called the house and its view 'magical'...said he lived there 20 some years after the murders, and I think he talked about what he paid for the property, what he eventually sold it for etc.

...and that he only ever felt peace up there on the hill...

Me, I would have been more freaked out by Trent Reznor and his ilk...

This is my personal picture which obviusly was taken from my Facebook page. I happen to be sitting at the other side of this table. I remained friends with Rudy since 1971 and he was a kind and gentle man. I don't know the legal circumstances of taking and using someone else's picture from Facebook but I will get that information Monday.

Rudy did the 20/20 interview on my bidding. He was never comfortable doing it and his nervousness showed to those of us who knew him well. There is every reaso why he should try to recover some of the expense he incurred as a result of this tragedy. It was his home, his soul lived there, it still does, and he simply wanted help to restore it back to living conditions. There is nothing goulish, irrational or selfish about it. The restoration of his home needed to be paid for, it's that simple.

This picture must be removed or the permission of the owner Woody McBreairty must be obtained. Legal action is already underway to accomplish this. The easiest way it to remove the picture now which is the copyrighted property of Woody McBreairty and was taken without permisson from his personal FB page.

I imagine it's pretty standard for lease agreements to include terms for damage to a property incurred by tenant occupancy? Otoh, though this damage occurred during the Polanski tenancy, it wasn't intentionally incurred by the tenants...or whatever the legal jargon.

Regardless whether Mr. Altobelli was legally entitled to enforce the terms of his lease agreement, or sue to fulfill the terms, doesn't mean it was a dignified thing to do under the circumstances. No disrespect intended...simply an opinion. Strictly business vs emotion, I guess.

I'd probably feel differently if Roman Polanski had personally (personally) stabbed and shot the victims damaging the carpets and flooring with their seeping blood...and if I owned the property, I'd probably sue him before he was carted off to prison.

Was damage to Mr. Altobelli's soul restored by charging (or suing) the tenant for a few hundred dollars worth of carpet, flooring and maybe a screen? And was his soul repaired knowing Paul Tate mopped up the blood of his dead daughter and unborn grandson?

No disrespect to Mr. Altobelli...i remember seeing him in that interview and thinking he seemed a kind and gentle man, soft spoken and sincere when he called the property 'magical' but did suing for the restoration compensate the vision of horror suffered in that house? Wouldn't for me...whether it was received from the tenant or from an insurance company, but that's just me.

sorry, my take on him is different. He sued Sharon tate s estate for the damages to his property as result of the murder for $200,000/ in 1969 that was more than the total worth of the house. Sharon s father finally settled for like $5000 after much legal back and forth. It was a nasty public fight and Altobelli damaged Sharons reputation badly, implying she had unsavory people to the home while a tenant and brought on the murders herself, more or less. While in reality, Manson picked the house because he had been to it (before Tate rented it and while Tate rented it) and it was isolated, simple as that, folks. ALtobelli rented the place to so many people before and after the murders that he created the unsavory reputation for goings on at the house himself. The house was in run down condition the entire time Altobelli owned it and it says something about the man who could find such peace in a house that is the most infamous one in the world due to the horrific murders committed there.
