Rice A Phony

You know what burns my ass? A fire about three and a half feet high.

But seriously folks. Nothing pisses me off more than hypocrites.

In fact, leaving aside the law (hey the government does) that's the main reason why I think Bobby should walk free. Every time I ask he says "I did it, Charlie didn't make me do it, I'm sorry I did it and I hope I get out but I understand what I did may mean I won't.'

Not Tex- "Charlie made me do it it was as if he held the knife but Jesus loves me so let me be."

Not Sadie- "Well I didn't really do anything but how can you understand since I talk to Jesus and he told me I was cool" (screw off Savage- the lady's a nutter from day one)

Not even Sandy - "Charlie didn't make anyone do it (okay we agree) and we didn't do it anyway (uh, no you did)."

But here's my WWF Smackdown for the moment...

Mark Turner just announced at charliemanson .com that "I'm pleased to announce that I've been working with Dennis Rice to setup a website for his prison ministry. It will grow with time, but you can see the beginnings at CLICK HERE. The format will likely change and new material will be added, but we have finally launched."

Now we all know that Mark was not on the side of truth in this case. And I'll go visit this new site in a second.

But here is what I want to say before I and you all go click on it.

If it doesn't explain why Dennis left his children (those are his in the Hendrickson documentary) at the ranch to be used as sexual playthings as I understand they were (children under 10) then screw your false hypocritical Jesus worship Mr. Rice.

And Mr. Turner- if I click on the damn thing and that isn't addressed SHAME on your for raising money for this hypocrite and shame on you for trying to sell his piece of shit false vest.

Okay let's all click together now....

Now i understand the connection between Dennis Rice and Marc Turner.

That vest has to be the worst looking garment that i've ever seen come out of any scene that was 60's oriented. It's like a bad acid trip :-)

I always thought that Dennis Rice was a late comer to the Manson scene and only joined up "After" Manson and the girls were locked away in the Hall of Justice.

The Hendrickson documentary was filmed while the trials were going on and that's where you see Dennis Rice for the first time.

Susan, a nutter? Not in my book but i do have to admit i'm biased on this one :-)

I wonder what Turner gets in return for his technical assistance in rolling out a website for Dennis, after all, didn't he also have a hand in promoting Debra Tate's website? It sounds like he's playing both sides of the field.

It seems like a simple enough site, but the Jesus thing just doesn't do it for me.

All Jesus all the time would lose its interest real quick.

I'd be curious to hear more of why Dennis Rice decided to go live with the Manson family after having visited Charlie in jail. That's a pretty big change in a man's life.

>THATS ALL CM WAS SAYIN TO THE GIRLS BACK THEN, BE YOUR SELF, GOD CREATED YOU..YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. <

No truer words were ever spoken.<

See this is what I am talking about regarding folks who quote Manson and then pretend he is so deep and insightful.

These sentiments of Manson's are somehow unique and original to some ears but to me they are no more original or deep than the scribblings of a 15 year-old goth chick in her diary after a fight with her parents.

I've tried to be open-minded when it comes to Charles Manson. When I first started getting interested in the case and reading about it I would frequently stumble over opinions that praised Manson as some kind of wise man with original and revolutionary ideas.

I thought, well maybe there is something to this guy. Maybe I should see what he really has to say and judge for myself.

I have. And he always winds up boring me to tears.

Nothing this "wise man" says hasn't already been said a million times before by dozens of other people. Why does Manson get the credit for being some kind of great thinker?

Methinks the emperor truly has no clothes.

Salem, just because I disagree with you does not mean I am close-minded. Does everyone who disagrees with you have a closed-mind? That's a somewhat arrogant mindset to walk around with I'd say.

I never casually dismissed Charles Manson. I really did open my mind and read some of his writings and watched a bunch of his appearances to see what all the fuss was about, to see why some people look up to him and think of him as a wise man who has a lot of insight to bestow on the world.

If I was impressed with him, I would be honest about it. I am not blinded by Vincent Bugliosi's tales or anything else when it comes to Manson. I just do not think he's all that.

He's just not all that interesting to me. He's a clown.

Holding an opinion that differs from yours does not automatically mean that one is closed-minded.

I dont think Trent Reznor is all that freaky, he's just a showman putting on an act. I do believe he is a talented musician who has done some interesting things with industrial alt pop/rock.

He's probably not all that weird in real life from what I gather (interviews and some folks I know who have met him). he's got an image to project.

I agree with Audio though in that I dont believe for a second that he wasn't at least peripherally aware of the murders when he rented the Tate house.

But ya know it's not like Trent actually committed the murders or was even around at the time to be a Family fan. He was a wee little lad at the time like myself.

What's interesting to me about Watkins is that he probably more than any other witness was responsible for MANSON getting the guilty verdict. Kasabian's testimony was like 98% TLB, 2% Helter Skelter (if that). Watkins was Bugliosi's chief Helter Skelter salesman.

Those girls shouldn't have been angry with Kasabian. They should have been angry with Paul. Kasabian put Tex, Sadie, Katie, Leslie away, the actual murderers. Paul put Charlie away.

Everyone deserves to live a quiet life and to be left alone if they wish. Sandra Good deserves it. Rosemary Labianca deserved it too. But back in 1969 it appears that Sandra didn't believe Rosemary deserved it. Rosemary was merely a pig for the roasting, a dead thing on which to hang a political message. One less car spewing pollution. One less adult sending a child off to war.

They were not "put" out on display at all. They WILLINGLY put themselves out there for all to see. They BEGGED for the spotlight. They LOVED the attention and seemed quite DESPERATE to court the media. Don't kid yourself. Sandy relished it.

>>>>This was the first time that we had a real clash of ideologies that suggested that perhaps we're all not doing it quite the right way.<<<<<

For someone who seems to pride himself on his knowledge of history, you sure do have a tenuous grasp of it when it suits your desire to glorify these idiots. The bulk of the "vigil" activity didn't even start until 1970. The nation had already seen A TON of challenges to societal norms in the preceeding decade. For you to claim the Manson girls represented the "first time that we had a real clash of ideologies" is laughable. For the most part they were mimicking the spirit of protest that had come before them (only in a severely misguided way). I'm sure some of the original 60's radical activists would love to hear that the Manson girls were the first challenges to straight society. They'd probably get a good laugh out of that.

The vast majority of the populace that remembers her name (and that will be a very small number) will only remember her as the freaky Manson girl who carved an X on her forehead. Sorry but that's the truth.

She's not even a tiny little minor footnote in 20th Century American history. Take a poll of the people in your office and ask them who Sandra Good was.

There's Sandra's legacy for you.

Yeah and they also had a sense of how to steal cars, commit credit card fraud, deal drugs, have sex with underage girls, rob gun stores, get into shootouts with the police, threaten and intimidate witnesses, and for some of them: commit murder and then laugh in the faces of the victim's families.

I think they should tour elementary schools and teach our children about their virtuous and profound way of life.

agnostic monk said...

Savage said...

>>>>>They became Martyrs to their own way of life, but their legend and their spirit will live on for generations to come.<<<<<

Yeah, in your mind maybe.

In the larger public consciousness they'll be remembered as a freaky oddball gang of murderous pseudo-hippie wingnuts that managed to scare middle-class America with some inanely strung together philosophies about life, death, and society. You'd have to be smoking crack to think that their historical legacy is anything more meaningful or important in the grand scheme of public memory.

Savage, you live in a romanticized Disneyland dream-world of what the Manson Family was all about. That's fine if you want to do that, but don't expect anyone with a marble of common sense to follow along with your fantasies.

I gotta go to bed, I've had enough crazy for one day.

Yepyep said...

"well some of the letters she wrote back then to certain *companies* got enuff attention to land her in jail."

And what impact did her jail sentence have on the world? Did the companies she threatened stop polluting the environment because of it?

The same goes for Lynn. I don't see any dramatic changes in the US. They didn't sign the Kyoto treaty and just keep on polluting at the same rate as ever.

But I'd love to be proven wrong.

Yepyep said...

Good post btw, Shopgirl. I agree 100%. The Manson Family killed the hippie movement and that's how they'll go into history.

Yepyep said...

"I humbly disagree-the so called hippie movement was on the decline way before the murders..."

That's true, hippies already had a bad name, but you can't deny that everything abruptly and virtually immediately came to an end after the Manson Family got arrested. It did mark the end of an era and created a long-lasting stigma on communes.

Yepyep said...

"OMG---ROFLMAO---CRYING--like these things never existed before..OMG CRYING...did ya ever hear of Jack the Ripper? (thats the first one I can think of, but I am sure there are more)
Thanks for the laugh, Shopgirl-needed that... "

Jack the Ripper is not a good example, as all his victims were killed OUTSIDE of their homes, with exception of the last victim.

"And in closing-the reason why you probably dont remember other cases-Shopgirl-is because they involved the killing of what people considered "low' class people, such as prostitutes and not a blond starlet that seems to have gotten your attention."

Prostitutes didn't and do not get creepy crawled: they're killed on the streets, where they usually live. That's true for Jack the Ripper and most other serial killer cases and has nothing to do with what Shopgirl was talking about.

But hey, whatever.

Yepyep said...

"Ummm..the Clutters in "In Cold Blood" then..there are many cases of home invasion, murder and death before the Tate/LaBianca's...also, why does it have to be cases INSIDE the home-or ooppps did ya forget about Shorty..I am sorry, he was just a ranch hand, in B grade movies.. "

What Shopgirl and I are talking about is the creepy crawling thing, not murder inside homes in general.

It seems to me you're deliberately misunderstanding what we're trying to say so that you can mock at us with arguments that have nothing to do with what we were talking about.

But hey, whatever.

Yepyep said...

After the Tate/LaBianca murders people started locking their doors at night. That never happened before because people felt safe inside their homes UNTIL THEN.

I hope you now understand what we're talking about and how you've been making nonsense remarks so far.

60skid said...

Shopgirl said: They introduced "home invasions"; targeting homes, victimizing, robbing and in some cases, killing occupants.

What about Richard Speck that was long before Manson ..he broke in a nurses dorm and killed 7 student nurses .

I believe the media is the one who started the 60s ended with Tate-La Bianica .it was August of 1969 and the 60s were over .

Yepyep said...

Whatever it was and who really was to blame: it is still the thing that the Manson Family will be most remembered for in the minds of the public, not Sandra and Lynette's actions for a better environment.

Yepyep said...

"I am sure, houses have been staked out prior to this.."

Of course, but until 1969 nobody locked their homes at night. Which was the point we were making. One killed prostitute that was found inside her house didn't cause much change in Victorian London. The upper class didn't feel threatned. So your analogy, in my opinion, still doesn't hold up.

Yepyep said...

I maintain that the way these murders happened - and probably also the way the media sensationalized it - instilled fear in people unlike most other crimes.

Everybody who was in California at that time will tell you everybody was so afraid. That's what people still remember from those days, not Sandy and Squeaky babbling about saving the earth.

Salem I would never deny that there was fun, closeness, a sense of belonging and love, at least for some of the hardcore members. Heck I've said before that I totally understand the appeal of some aspects of that life. Hanging out in the sunshine, smoking a big fattie, playing music with friends.

BUT, you cannot in all honestly deny that there also was...

- stolen cars
- credit card fraud
- drug dealing
- sex with underage girls
- a major gun store robbery leading to
- a shootout with the police
- other crimes and run-ins with the law
- thuggish threatening and intimidation of prosecution witnesses
- and for some of them: MURDER followed by LAUGHTER in the faces of the victim's families

To deny the negative aspects and only focus on the positive aspects is what Savage seems to do, which is why I call his perspective a romanticized Disneyland dream-world version.

See Salem that is where you are totally wrong. One does NOT have to buy into Bugliosi's tall tales to recognize the negative aspects of life at Spahn and Barkers.

YES there was fun, YES there were good times but there was also a lot of shitty behavior and a good deal of crime. I take everything Bugliosi said with a HUGE grain of salt but I still have the sense to realize the good and bad of their lifestyle.

Ignorance would be to deny the negative and glorify the positive.

The Richard Speck mass murders scared the holy shit outta me. My oldest sister was in nursing school at the time. I was about 10 when that happened and I had to sleep with the lights on. I also was scared shitless when Kennedy was assassinated because I thought the Russians were going to drop the bomb on us..I was too young to understand all of that.

I felt the same way as you did. After the Richard Speck murders ..we always locked our doors I also thought the Russians were coming to get us after Kennedy was killed .

I feel much the same as you do about Tate-La Bianca murders

drug fueled paranoid crime spree, a drug burn, don't forget the money element which was also another factor

"Everybody who was in California at that time will tell you everybody was so afraid. That's what people still remember from those days, not Sandy and Squeaky babbling about saving the earth."

This has been my point all along in this thread. That is the family's public legacy, the FRIGHT AND FREAK factor, like it or not. The general public will not and for the most part does not remember Sandy and Squeaky babbling about saving the earth. They remember a bunch of scary kooks.

This isn't a value judgement. This is merely an observation of how these people were and are perceived by the public.

They can go ahead and blame Bugliosi and the media for some of that perception, and maybe they have a point. But they also played along with those perceptions and made it very very easy for the public to view them this way.

Just because Savage loves and respects the former family members as being in line with his wacky revolutionary ideals doesn't mean the general public does or ever will see it that way.

The truth might hurt to family fans but the truth is the truth.

What? *I* can't see beyond Bugliosi's Helter Skelter? I've made it perfectly clear that I view everything Bugliosi said as suspect.

Damnit I'm gonna say it again; JUST BECAUSE I CAN RECOGNIZE THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE DOESN'T MEAN I AM BLINDED BY BUGLIOSI'S TALES!!!!!

You guys really need to get off that condescending line of thinking anyone who doesn't see 100% sunshine and lollipops at Spahn Ranch is somehow duped by Bugliosi. That's just total shit.

Savage, I lived in Los Angeles before moving up here to San Francisco. I'm very familiar with Malibu and I've experienced more in my life than you know. Don't tell me how I "have to look" at how these people lived. I've looked PLENTY. Yeah yeah yeah "come to now", "live for the moment". I understand all that and on some levels can see the appeal, BUT IT DOES NOT NEGATE the crime, the sex with minors, the thuggish behavior, breaking into people's homes, etc. etc. etc.

Stop pretending you have some kind of special insight into life with the family that others are incapable of grasping. It just makes you come off as ridiculous.

you're missing my point entirely. I am capable of opening my mind and grapsing these concepts. They really aren't as deep as you make them out to be, and the Manson family certainly wasn't the only group tossing around these kinds of philosophies.

What I am saying is that regardless of these philosophies, the Manson family was involved in all manner of crimes and shitty behavior even BEFORE TLB. To deny that is to wallow in your own form of ignorance.

I'd be willing to bet that not even everyone in the core group agreed on all their philosophies. I've always believed that life with the Manson family meant different things to different people. Clearly it meant something different to Sandra Good than it did to Susan Atkins. Clearly it meant something different to Gypsy than it did to Leslie Van Houten.

But you keep talking abuot them like they were indeed all "ONE". The reality is they were just as prone to political wrangling, power-struggles, and backstabbing as anyone else out in "straight society".

>>>>The Crimes and the events that came afterwards really overshadows who these people really were.<<<<

Actually, I think the crimes and the behaviors of the family members that came afterwards SPEAKS VOLUMES about who these people really were.

>>>>To say that there is no attraction to their lifestyle is to not understand who these people were.<<<<<

I never said there was nothing about it that is attractive. I was young once too you know. I spent half my college days with my face buried in a bong with close knit friends who felt like a sharing, communal family. I was no stranger to Grateful Dead shows and to Rave culture. I flirted with all manner of subcultures, spiritual philosophies, and ideals that opposed my parents comfortable suburban values. I'm not completely ignorant of the appeal of shaking off mainstream mores.

I still think the "family" were a bunch of idiots. Interesting idiots, and not everything they did or said was wrong or bad or off-base, some of it was quite riveting and poignant, but idiots nonetheless.

agnostic monk said...

Savage, keep trying to make it sound deeper and more exotic than it really was. It's quite comical.

I'll bet even many of those who were present at the time would laugh at your attempts to romanticize the family. Half the time they didn't even know what the fuck they were saying. Even Susan Atkins admits that now.

But you can quite comfortably from your armchair 30+ years later wax poetic about it like it was some admirable revolutionary movement that actually had much meaning beyond self-indulgence and rebellion.

>>>>The spirit of who these people were can be found in their songs.<<<<

I agree, and I like some of those songs. But that's not the only place to look.

The spirit of who these people were can ALSO be found in the remaining wreckage at Death Valley...

- in the still standing Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic where the girls got treated for their STD's (on the Establishment's dime)...

- on the blades of grass on the lawn at Cielo Drive where Abigail Folger's blood dried to a crisp in the hot LA morning sun....

- in the puddle of vomit that caked the walls of the toilet bowl in the Hawaii restroom after Barbara Hoyt was poisoned....

- on the heartbroken face of Doris Tate as the girls giggled and taunted....

- on the trigger of Squeaky's rifle that she caressed as she asserted that "Snitches will be taken care of" on film....

- in the heart of Sandra Good's son, who grew up knowing his mother would rather sit in prison in allegiance to Charles Manson than raise her own child...

- on the face of Nancy Pitman when she claimed that she didn't care one way or the other about the death of Sharon Tate's baby...

You're living in a dream world if you think their spirits can only be found in their music. If you really had any courage, you'd face up to the WHOLE of who they were, not just one romantic part that came and went in the blink of an eye.

Savage, YOU'RE image of the "family" is just as one-dimensional as the media-endorsed "acid-crazed zombie hippie thrill killers" image.

And I would not have remained friends with the kind of person that would giggle and taunt during proceedings where the victim's families were present. You immediately jumped on 60'skid back in the early days with your Michael Savage "L-I-B-E-R-A-L" screech. You've flung insult after insult towards Heaven. You have posted abusive and obnoxious comments and then cowardly turn around and delete them.

You have not extended the courtesy of keeping things civil so I'm not sure why you think you deserve that respect extended back to you. I love the fact that the Col has set up this forum. I feel you've pissed on it any number of times.

#2. I'm sorry but I do get the sense that you're a bit of a poseur with all your revolutionary talk and your glorification of the Manson Family. Sometimes it even comes off as parody. Not sure how else to explain it, but I'm just not really buying it.

I may get a little frustrated when I hear people talking about life with the family as though it was all kisses in the raindrops for everyone there and that there wasn't any thuggish, skanky or criminal behavior going on. Even many who were there, some of the major players, do not pretend that it was all 100% lollipops. Apparently you are in touch with some people who were there pre-TLB and who say that it was all 100% lollipops and they were all just peace-loving people who were doing their own thing. Salem,

Of course, if you meant you don't know how to do the horizontal mambo in a safe way.... then I must recommend to you: 'Trojans' - for maximum protection and reduced worries about 'slip-ups' - 9 months from now - if you know what I mean

I think Endora thinks you and Savage want to hook up LOL

Endora,

Haven't you wondered why they never did a reunion show? Agnes passed away in '74 - she had tremendous theatrical merit and when most people think about their mother-in-law; usually an image of "Endora" pops into their minds! Don't you think? She touched a lot of lives.

Yes I agree she has tremendous theatrical merit and yes you could get a image of her thinking about a mother in law
